At the start of 2024, I landed a new job as a financial analyst on Wall Street.

Needless to say, it was a lot of work.

12-hour days, 5-hour sleeps, work on the weekends.

But hey, at least I was gettin' paiddddddd.

A few months into the gig, I noticed something: my shirt felt way tighter.

"Ah, must be the washing," I thought.

Spoiler alert: it wasn't.

See, the thing about gaining weight is that it creeps up on you.

You don’t notice it at first because the change is gradual.

You adapt to the slightly fluffier version of yourself.

You get used to it over time.

And so you don’t realize how different you actually look.

But eventually you get a wake-up call.


Now, the extremity of that wake-up call varies.


Some people get it early when a family member mentions it.


Some people when their partner suddenly loses attraction.


Others when their friends give them a new nickname.

Unfortunately, for some people, the wake-up calls aren’t enough.

They keep going down a path that eventually leads to real, sometimes irreversible, damage.

After my first stretch of weight gain, everything unraveled.

I developed severe heart palpitations, crippling anxiety, and depression.

All of which pushed me toward even more bad habits.

I drank more. I smoked. I used weed. I ate junk food nonstop.

I became someone I didn’t recognize.

And my health was in real danger.


I was 23 years old, hypogonadal, and on the edge of developing diabetes.

This was my wake-up call:

Clearly, I had dug myself into a hole, and I needed to find a way out fast.

The question then became: how do I get healthy again?

Like most young people, I turned to the internet.

And after hours of consuming the fitness influencer content, the message was loud and clear:

"Track your macros"
"Track your calories"
"No carbs"

"No sugar"

"Chicken and broccoli only"

So that's exactly what I did. And guess what? It worked!


Within a couple of weeks, I was already a few pounds lighter!

Smooth sailing right?

Wrong.

Because as soon as my responsibilities piled back up, so did the weight that I had just lost.

This cycle repeated every time I tried something new or added another variable.

Keto. Fasted cardio. 6 days a week in the gym.

None of it worked. And here’s why.

An overly complicated approach to health and fitness, combined with a demanding schedule, is a recipe for disaster.

Newsflash: not everyone is a social media influencer who can spend each day tracking calories.

I didn’t track anything. I didn’t starve myself. I didn’t cut out my favorite foods.

I trained for 40 minutes, 3 days per week, instead of 2 hours, 6 days per week.

I knew I wouldn’t get much sunlight.

And no matter how much Steroid Steve yelled at me on Instagram, I was not going to eat raw liver.
